DOs in LPG Use

  • Be sure the cylinder is in good condition. Check for excessive rustiness & dents especially at the bottom part.
  • Have the installation or repair made by an experienced person.
  • Observe and check the color of the flames. A blue flame is desirable at all times. A yellow flame indicates poor combustion & wastes a lot of LPG heat.
  • LPG is intentionally odorized to help you detect a leak coming from the stove, cylinder, regulator, or hose.
  • Be sure the cylinder is located in a place where there is ventilation. LPG is heavier than air and it seeks a lower level. Air vents, therefore should preferably be at floor level.
  • Always handle LPG cylinders in an upright position.
  • Clean your gas stove regularly & check out condition of LPG hose.

DONTs in LPG Use

  1. Don’t test for leak with a match, candle or open flame.
  2. Don’t try to repair an unfamiliar system by yourself. Call an experienced LPG serviceman.
  3. Don’t tamper or repair the cylinder.
  4. Don’t remove the hose connection from the stove or the regulator. Ask a serviceman to do it for you.
  5. Don’t accept an under filled or a defective cylinder. You can have it weighed. You can choose a cylinder that is clean and free from any defect.
  6. Don’t buy UNBRANDED LPG cylinders. Be sure it has proper markings, e.g., brand name, tare weight.

What to do in case of LPG leaks

  1. LPG IS ESCAPING BUT HAS NOT IGNITED

Clear the area, house, or building and immediately summon for help.

If out in the open:

  • See if the flow of LPG can be stopped either at the source of the leak or by closing the valves to isolate the leaking equipment.
  • In all cases, avoid getting into the vapor cloud and always stay u upwind.
  • All possible sources of ignition should be shut off. Cordon off the area. Only those people directly concerned with the mergency should be allowed in the vicinity.
  • Use water spray (fog) to disperse the vapor cloud and keep the gas from reaching any source of ignition.

In buildings, homes, or enclosed structures:

  • Evacuate the building, immediately and in as orderly manner as possible.
  • Shut off the flow of gas in the meantime if this is possible.
  • Do not touch any electrical equipment. Leave lights, fans, etc. as you find them. Shutting off or turning on electrical equipment will cause sparks.
  • Open all possible sources of ventilation -windows, doors, to help bring the vapor below the flammable range.
  • If you run out of gas, turn off all burners before connecting the regulator to a new, filled cylinder.
  • When you call the dealer, a serviceman will see you. Be sure he is wearing the prescribed uniform of his brand. Ask for his ID & photo. If in doubt, call the dealer again. Ask if there is a form to sign or ask for a receipt when certain payment is made.
  • Apply soap & water solution to look for bubbles coming out of leaks.
  • When not using the stove, turn off the regulator & valves.

LPG IS ESCAPING AND BURNING

  • Try to stop the flow of gas.
  • Keep the equipment cool with water spray.
  • Clear the area of all people not concerned with the emergency.
  • Do not put fire out unless you can cut off the fuel to the fire. It is better to let LPG burn out under control than put it out because the leak cannot be stopped.
  • On fires involving cylindrical containers, don’t stay near the ends. The circumferential seams usually fall first. The cylindrical container can take off like a rocket.
